PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE

Past Continuous Tense English-ലിൽ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത്, ഒരു പ്രവൃത്തി ഭൂതകാലത്തിൽ ഒരു നിർദ്ദിഷ്ട സമയത്ത് നടക്കുകയായിരുന്നുവെന്ന് സൂചിപ്പിക്കാനാണ്. ഈ tense-ൽ, "was" അല്ലെങ്കിൽ "were" എന്ന auxiliary verbs-ന്റെ കൂടെ verb-ന്റെ "ing" form (present participle) ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.

Past Continuous Tense ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന സാഹചര്യങ്ങൾ:

1. ഭൂതകാലത്തിൽ നിർദ്ദിഷ്ട സമയത്ത് നടന്ന പ്രവൃത്തികൾ (Actions Happening at a Specific Time in the Past):
   ഒരു പ്രവർത്തനം ഭൂതകാലത്തിലെ ഒരു പ്രത്യേക സമയത്ത് നടക്കുകയായിരുന്നുവെന്ന് സൂചിപ്പിക്കാനാണ് past continuous tense ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത്.
   
   • Example:
     At 8 PM yesterday, I was watching TV.
     ഇന്നലെ രാത്രി 8 മണിക്ക്, ഞാൻ ടിവി കാണുകയായിരുന്നു.

1. ഒരു വേളയിൽ അട്ടിമറിക്കപ്പെട്ട പ്രവൃത്തികൾ (Interrupted Actions in the Past):
   ഒരു പ്രവൃത്തി നടക്കുന്നതിനിടയിൽ മറ്റൊരു പ്രവൃത്തി അതിനെ തടസ്സപ്പെടുത്തുകയാണെങ്കിൽ, past continuous tense ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.
   
   • Example:
     She was cooking when the phone rang.
     ഫോൺ മുഴങ്ങുമ്പോൾ അവൾ പാചകം ചെയ്യുകയായിരുന്നു.

1. ഭൂതകാലത്തിൽ ഒരേ സമയം നടന്നിരുന്ന പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ (Simultaneous Actions in the Past):
   രണ്ട് പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ ഒരു സമയം നടക്കുകയായിരുന്നുവെന്ന് സൂചിപ്പിക്കാനാണ് ഈ tense ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത്.
   
   • Example:
     While I was reading, he was playing the piano.
     ഞാൻ വായിക്കുമ്പോൾ, അവൻ പിയാനോ വായിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു.

1. ഭൂതകാലത്തിൽ പശ്ചാത്തലം നൽകിയ പ്രവർത്തികൾ (Background Actions in the Past):
   ഒരു കഥ പറയുമ്പോൾ പശ്ചാത്തലത്തിലെ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ past continuous tense-ൽ വിശദീകരിക്കുന്നു.
   
   • Example:
     The sun was setting, and the birds were singing.
     സൂര്യൻ അസ്തമിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു, പക്ഷികൾ പാടികൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു.

Past Continuous Tense-ന്റെ ഘടന:

• Positive Sentence: Subject + was/were + verb (ing form) + object

    അവൾ ഒരു പുസ്തകം വായിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു.
• Negative Sentence: Subject + was/were + not + verb (ing form) + object
  
  • Example:
    They were not playing football.
    അവർ ഫുട്ബോൾ കളിക്കുകയായിരുന്നില്ല.
• Question: Was/were + subject + verb (ing form) + object?
  
  • Example:
    Was he working when you called?
    നീ ഫോൺ ചെയ്തപ്പോൾ അവൻ ജോലി ചെയ്യുകയായിരുന്നോ?

Expressions commonly used with Past Continuous Tense:

• "While," "when," "as," "at that time," "all day," "all night" തുടങ്ങിയ expressions past continuous tense-ന്റെ കൂടെ സാധാരണയായി ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.
  • Example:
    I was sleeping when the storm hit.
    കാറ്റ് വീശിയപ്പോൾ ഞാൻ ഉറങ്ങിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു.

Past Continuous Tense English-ലും Malayalam-ലും ഒരേ പോലെ ഉപയോഗിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. Malayalam-ലിൽ, "ചെയ്തുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു," "വായിക്കുകയായിരുന്നുവു," "കളിക്കുകയായിരുന്നില്ല" എന്നിവ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് past continuous tense-ന്റെ ആശയം പ്രയോഗിക്കുന്നു.

   • Actions in Progress at a Specific Time in       the Past: To describe an       action that was happening at a particular moment in the past.
     • At 8 PM last night, I was watching TV.
   • Interrupted Actions: To show that a past action was       interrupted by another action.
     • I was reading when the phone rang.
   • Parallel Actions: To describe two or more actions that       were happening at the same time in the past.
     • While she was cooking, he was setting        the table.
   • Setting the Scene: To set the background for a story.
     • The sun was setting, and the birds were        singing.

   • Negative: She was not (wasn't) sleeping       when I called.
